Wonderful. I love that the story is engaging; the layout of the biographical pages brings Cole's milestones, and inner spirit, to life. Several images of some of his well-nigh significant works are included... my favorite is the five-role "Course of Empire" series. A fairly brief book, but concisely and gracefully packed with information & insight. The only other affair I'd consider wishing for is a bit more history of the era and some 'farther reading' and/or other supplementary information. But really, this is a gem unto itself.
Read for Children's Books Sept. 2020.

There was some serendipity today when I read this book while eating breakfast and and then toured a museum locally that I'd never been to that had an showroom of Thomas Cole'south INCLUDING his famous works noted in the picture book! The message it important about pursuing your passion and interests at all costs-- even if it hateful using a tablecloth equally a coat and sleeping outside but then he fabricated it big with his landscape paintings peculiarly in recognizing the beauty of nature and right in our lawn of the Catskills.
Lovely picture book with vivid coloring and the real-life paintings that fabricated him most famous while as well sharing his story and struggle and untimely death (non tragic, just that he could have gone on to do more with a fully-lived life).

Talbott's text is rather simplistic, straightforward, and informative. Information technology succinctly tells the life of Thomas Cole and his journey to American and somewhen the Hudson, which Cole would paint and bring to life. In visual vignettes rendered in mixed-media art, Talbott depicts Cole traveling on human foot, sleeping in derelict conditions, and finding salvation through moments spent painting.
The premise of the book is rather straightforward. When the industrial revolution limited Thomas Cole'south family'southward economical opportunities in England, his dream of coming to America was realized. While taking a steamer trip upwardly the Hudson River, Cole discovered his muse in the striking mural. He would infuse his paintings of the American wilderness with majesty and romance.

Talbott'southward story of Cole did a beautiful job focusing on how he found his passion, the hardships he faced to exist successful, and his passions other than art. Cole loved the environment and saw even and then that we were going to lose it if nosotros didn't take intendance of it. I also truly loved the inclusion of some of his paintings. Often, in picture book biographies, the actual paintings aren't shown, so I found that really helpful.
...moreTalbott tells the complicated story of Cole's life with a refreshing ease. He has a real clarity in the story he is telling, keeping the tale focused on the results of Cole's early struggles and then when he obtains success on the new inspirations Cole found on his travels. The book reads well and Cole'south story demonstrates tenacity and resilience as he followed a winding style toward being well known. It is also the story of a young America, what it said to a immature immigrant and how its wilderness was worth preserving.
The illustrations combine a friendly lightness fifty-fifty during Cole'southward struggles with Cole's own paintings. It is a care for to see his actual paintings as part of the book. They are hinted at in other sections, but when it truly is his ain they are dazzling. They demonstrate firmly why his art caught on and he became a famous painter.
A particularly timely book nigh an immigrant artist who loved America and caught her essence in pigment. Appropriate for ages 6-ix.

Interestingly subsequently immigrating fromEngland the family unit ended up in Steubenville, Ohio. What I detect odd is that information technology took Cole returning eastward to the Hudson River Valley to observe his favorite subject thing, nature. Cole would have had very similar scenery in Steubenville in the Ohio River Valley where at the time the river was wild as it had no dams controlling any of the catamenia of the river.
The factor that I liked in this title is that the reproductions of Cole'due south paintings occurred within the text where they were being discussed. Information technology was a skillful mix of illustration and reproductions. ...more than
